Hi, Many thanks for your question. I don't have a degree in public health but I am the communities editor for targetjobs.co.uk so I'll have a go at answering your query. The majority of careers in public health in the UK are - not surprisingly - in the public sector. You could work either for a local authority (a council) or in the NHS. Both paths would involve assessing health policies and influencing their development. There is a lot of training involved even after a masters as you’ll need to keep up to date with government policies and public health trends. Look up the faculty of public health – part of the Royal College of Physicians – if you haven’t already, as they operate much of the training involved. If you want to work overseas – perhaps for an NGO (non-governmental organisation) - then there’s likely to more training involved there as well. NGOs nowadays tend to try to employ locals people rather than people from developed countries but you could still get involved in delivering training or devising or managing projects. These kinds of jobs are very highly sought after and it’s likely that you’ll need voluntary experience to get in. Public health as a field is a specialist area, so there’s the potential to achieve a lot and progress quickly. I hope this is is helpful. Please let us know if you need more ideas.
