Top tips on making European applications
Emma Davidson, analyst and associate recruiter, Bank of America (London, Europe), offers her expertise on making applications.
What makes a good application stand out?
A good application demonstrates an understanding of the organisation and the division the candidate has applied to. If an organisation uses open questions this is where you can differentiate yourself from other applications and really make your application stand out. Consider why the organisation is asking the questions and ensure your answers are concise, focused and answer the question.
What are the common pitfalls made by applicants?
There are a number of common mistakes made by candidates: the main one being lack of attention to detail. Always complete the entire application form and remember to proofread and check for grammatical errors before submitting your application. If you use the organisation’s name make sure you spell it correctly and that you have used the correct one if making multiple applications. Small mistakes like these can give the impression a candidate hasn’t taken the time and effort required to complete the form and insinuates they are not serious about applying.
How can candidates best sell their core competences?
Prior to attending an interview a candidate should consider what skills are required for the role and how they can demonstrate these. When asked questions, wherever possible, candidates should back answers up with examples of how they have or would approach situations.
How can candidates demonstrate that they have researched an employer?
Successful candidates will be able to show that they have been on the organisation’s website and be able to weave this information into some of their answers. They should also be aware of recent deals and newspaper articles the organisation has featured in recently. The candidate should be able to clearly articulate why they want to work for that employer above others.
