Job Description

We are looking for graduate chemists to work within our Nuclear Operations based at Babcock’s Environmental Laboratories at Westlakes, Cumbria. Chemists will contribute to the provision of analytical services for the detection and measurement of radioactive materials in air, water, soil and biological samples. Methods include conventional “wet” chemistry and modern instrumental methods such as mass spectrometry and chromatography. Initially you will embark on a professional development programme which can lead to professional registration with the Royal Society of Chemistry or other suitable professional body. During the initial two-year period graduates will gain a wide range of experience in technical and commercial activities. You will learn to work in a safe and efficient manner in a highly regulated environment. All graduates will be expected to spend some time both at our offices and working with our client at their sites. In addition, graduates will take part in training and development activities designed to build technical, management and interpersonal career skills.

Please note that the start date for this position will be 3rd September 2012.

Qualifications & Requirements

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following:

2.1 Honours degree in chemistry.
– Note other grades or similar degrees may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Our training programme is accredited by the IMechE and IET and provides the initial training and experience requirements that will satisfy other professional bodies. We prefer graduates to have degrees that are accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Graduates must have good interpersonal qualities and management potential.

A full, and clean, driving licence is required.

Security

Graduates undertaking their training with Babcock's Nuclear business will be expected to work on nuclear sites and be capable of obtaining and maintaining the required security clearance. Job offers will be subject to successful conclusion of the vetting process.
