Jones Day

Training Contract

Jones Day operates as one firm worldwide with 2,500 lawyers in 34 offices. Jones Day in London is a key part of this international partnership and has around 200 lawyers, including around 50 partners and 35 trainees. This means that we can offer our lawyers a perfect combination – the intimacy and atmosphere of a mediumsized City firm with access to both UK and multinational clients.

Who should apply

Candidates should have obtained or be predicted at least a 2.1 degree in any discipline. We look for candidates with either a law or non-law degree, who have strong intellectual and analytical ability and good communication skills and who can demonstrate resourcefulness, drive, dedication and the ability to be a team player.

Training programme

The firm operates a unique, non-rotational system of training which is designed to provide freedom, flexibility and responsibility from the start. Our trainees work across different practice areas concurrently and are encouraged to assume their own workload. This allows for early responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. As our trainees do not move to a different department every six months, they don’t miss the end of deals or trials that they have worked on. Work will vary from small cases, which trainees may handle alone (under the supervision of a senior lawyer), to matters where they will assist a partner or an associate solicitor. The firm runs a structured training programme with a regular schedule of seminars to support the thorough practical training.

Salary

We are raising the starting salary for future trainees from £39,000 to £41,000. This salary will be reviewed in July of each year of the training contract and current plans are to increase the salary to £46,000 at the first review (10 months) and £50,000 at the second review (22 months). The salary on qualification is currently at £70,000.
