Graduate employer profile

Macquarie Group (Macquarie) is a global provider of banking, financial, advisory, investment and funds management services, with particular expertise in resources and commodities, energy, financial institutions, infrastructure and real estate. Macquarie’s main business focus is making returns by providing a diversified range of services to clients. The diversity of our operations is a key strength. Macquarie acts on behalf of institutional, corporate and retail clients and counterparties around the world.

Founded in 1969, Macquarie employs more than 15,500 people in over 28 countries. At 31 March 2011, Macquarie had assets under management of $A310 billion.

Macquarie organises its activities into six operating groups within which individual businesses operate.

  • Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities (FICC)
  • Macquarie Capital (MacCap)
  • Macquarie Funds Group (MFG)
  • Macquarie Securities Group (MSG)
  • Corporate and Asset Finance Group (CAF)
  • Banking and Financial Services Group (BFS)

Macquarie's strength lies in its unique structure and management style which enables businesses to exercise significant operating freedom balanced by limits on risk and observance of professional standards - this is referred to as 'freedom within boundaries'.

Macquarie's management approach encourages a sense of ownership and fosters an entrepreneurial culture among staff, which has led to a history of innovation. Strong prudential management is fundamental to this approach. The focus of central management is on risks to Macquarie arising from market and industry influences and issues of medium and long-term significance.

Other core elements of Macquarie's approach are:

  • Encouraging high ethical and professional standards
  • Commitment to clients
  • Commitment to growth
  • Recruiting, retaining and motivating quality staff
  • Aligning staff rewards with those of shareholders
  • Transparent and comprehensive reporting; including financial reporting and risk reporting.

We believe a company is a member of society and therefore one of its responsibilities is to work for the betterment of that society. We take enormous pride in our philanthropic achievements and environmental initiatives. The Macquarie Group Foundation was formally established in 1985 and is a leading benefactor to the community sector. Since its inception, the Foundation, together with Macquarie staff, have given more than $A145 million to thousands of community organisations around the world.

Staff engagement is integral to Macquarie’s community giving program and Macquarie staff provide many hours of support to not-for-profit organisations in volunteer, pro bono, board and executive capacities.

A key feature of the Macquarie Group Foundation’s approach is the diversity of its support. The Foundation supports programs in the areas of health, education, the arts, welfare and the environment.

On our graduate programme you’ll join a specific business group and be an integral member of the team from the start. You’ll participate in a structured induction and our open, non-hierarchical environment fosters real team work and helps to ensure individual contributions are recognised and rewarded. Operating in small teams, supported by senior executives, you will have real responsibility from day one, giving you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, get the exposure and freedom to determine your career path, and accelerate your career in a highly successful organisation.

We recruit graduates into the following areas:

  • Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities (FICC)
  • Information Technology Group (ITG)
  • Macquarie Capital (MacCap)
