Barclays Capital

Graduate employer profile

About us

Barclays Capital is the investment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC, offering strategic advisory, financing and risk management solutions to large corporate, government and institutional clients. Employing 25,000 people globally in offices around the world, we have the global reach and distribution power to meet the needs of issuers and investors in all the major financial markets.

Our distinctive business model has cemented our position as a world leader in the industry. But we’re still relatively young and extremely ambitious. Founded just 14 years ago, we’re still growing year on year and continually pursuing excellence in everything we do. With a pioneering spirit, intellectual rigour and an uncommonly collaborative approach, we put the needs of clients and stakeholders at the heart of every decision we make. Even against the backdrop of ever-changing financial markets, we’re continuing to expand, providing our clients with a more comprehensive service than ever. Our 2008 acquisition of Lehman Brothers’ US broker-dealer business has added M&A and cash equities expertise to our portfolio – a clear example of the bold thinking that defines our organisation.

Unsurprisingly, the firm’s IT strategy is entirely business-driven. Our Technology function is made up of a team of specialists who use their skills to support our internal infrastructure and to help us develop new products. Working in close partnership with traders and financial professionals, our team maintains and creates the powerful trading and analytical systems that are integral to our success. While we provide 24-hour a day support, our technologists work alongside many business areas and are broadly grouped into global teams spanning three time zones: Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas.

For technically capable people with an interest in finance, it’s a place to make your mark. You’ll begin your career in an IT group working closely with our ‘front office’ divisions. Identifying, tracking and resolving IT issues are initial duties, alongside talking with traders to implement quantitative models. Further down the line, you could find yourself improving the design and structure of databases which will increase the speed and efficiency of our firm’s day-to-day operations. Apart from technical knowledge, the technology role demands a strong sense of initiative and the ability to prioritise workloads.

The IT graduate programme

Most firms will tell you that graduates are key to their success. But few can demonstrate a level of commitment to match ours. Senior managers across Barclays Capital are intrinsically involved in graduate training, giving you a remarkable degree of insight and exposure from the moment you join us. Our graduate programme starts with an intensive introduction to the firm, our products, instruments and services, and the wider financial markets. You’ll gain more than a theoretical understanding, however, with a variety of case studies, workshops and presentations giving you invaluable practical knowledge and skills. You can also expect comprehensive role-specific training, plus soft skills development. Technology graduates will complete 3 x 6 month rotations within an Application Development, Application Management or IT Production (Infrastructure) team.

Internships

Most of our internships last for 8-10 weeks over the summer, although we do have off-cycle opportunities depending on business need. In all cases, you’ll find yourself at the heart of the action. You’ll gain real experience in a real role, working on anything from live transactions and marketing projects to research and analysis, according to the business area you join. As well as benefiting from extensive training before and during the programme, you’ll have regular opportunities to network with intern colleagues, recent graduates and senior members of the firm.

Spring Programme

For first year students, or those in their second year of a four year course, we offer a week long insight programme giving you the opportunity to find more about the firm through presentations, training sessions, workshadowing & networking opportunities.
