Vacation schemes

Manches offers a limited number of Summer Scheme places during June and July. Students are placed in a department of their choice (subject to availability) and are supervised by a partner or an assistant solicitor. The aim is to give students the opportunity to join us for a normal busy working week, experiencing the type of work that a trainee would do, and to experience first-hand the friendly culture at Manches. Students also undertake assessment exercises and attend various social events.

Our culture

Manches has a strong sense of identity and individualism and promotes a relaxed, friendly atmosphere within its offices. Our approach to both clients and colleagues is one of pragmatism – aiming to communicate high-quality, succinct, practical solutions in a clear, timely and cost-effective manner, whilst also ensuring that clients enjoy working with us.

There is no artificial 'long hours culture' at Manches – we demand that our trainees and lawyers are loyal and work very hard, dedicating whatever hours are required to meet client demands on a day-to-day basis, but we also encourage our people to have a life and interests outside the office.

Graduate training and development

Following a comprehensive induction programme, our trainees learn almost entirely by practical on-the-job training in each of four different seats, which we feel is the most successful learning method. In addition, the Professional Skills Course is run throughout the two years, so elective choices can be matched to seats or areas of particular interest.

We try to give trainees the opportunity, where appropriate, to run their own files from an early stage in their graduate training contract so that they gain real experience at every stage of a transaction or case. We expect our trainees to be dedicated, enthusiastic and proactive and take steps to manage their own learning and self-development by actively seeking out involvement in challenging work. Newly qualified solicitors who stay on with the firm then enter into our structured Career Development Programme which runs all the way through to partnership level.
