Devereux Chambers

Devereux is a top civil set and members of Chambers are recognised as leaders in their specialist fields in both the Legal 500 and Chambers UK directories. We are friendly and forward-looking and have an excellent reputation for the quality of our work.

Areas of Practice

Our principal areas of practice are:

  • Commercial litigation and arbitration
  • Employment, discrimination and pensions
  • Personal injury and clinical negligence
  • Tax and finance

Pupillage

Devereux has a rigorous, structured and challenging pupillage programme. We seek to ensure that pupillage with us is
stimulating and exciting and that pupils receive the support necessary to fulfil their potential.

Pupillage is split between three dedicated pupil supervisors, all senior members of Chambers. Our aim is to enable our pupils to fully experience the life of a barrister. Typical responsibilities will include working on client papers, undertaking legal research, drafting advice, pleadings and skeleton arguments, as well as joining pupil supervisors in client conferences and accompanying them to court. Pupils also have the opportunity to work with other members of Chambers which means they benefit from feedback from a wide variety of practitioners and gain an insight into different practice areas and approaches. In the second six months pupils start to take on their own cases in the Employment
Tribunal and County Court. Our pupils are encouraged to join the Free Representation Unit (FRU) to gain additional advocacy and
case management experience.

Pupils are required to complete a number of pieces of assessed written work and to carry out two advocacy exercises in front of
former members of Chambers who are now judges.

In selecting our pupils, we look for graduates who can demonstrate incisive analysis, strong advocacy skills and academic excellence. We normally offer two 12-month pupillages, each carrying an award of £42,500, £12,500 of which can be advanced for the BPTC year (visit Chambers’ website for the most up to date details and terms relating to the pupillage award. Applications for pupillage should be made through the Pupillage Portal (www.pupillages.com).

Mini-pupillage

We have around 30 mini-pupillage places available each year and we hold an annual open day for an additional 20 people interested in learning more about a career as a barrister at Devereux. We do not require candidates applying for pupillage to complete a mini-pupillage with us or to
attend our open day as part of our application process. Indeed, the demand for places is so great that we can only accommodate a small number of those wishing to apply for pupillage. However, we do encourage those who are intending to apply for pupillage to do a mini-pupillage or to attend our open day as a way of learning more about the work and atmosphere of Chambers. To be considered for a minipupillage or a place at our open day, please complete and submit the application form that can be found on the recruitment page of our website.
