Max Fordham are award-winning designers of energy-efficient systems for building services and the wider environment. We design services for individual buildings in a wide range of sectors as well as for urban master planning and infrastructure.
The practice was founded in 1966 by Max Fordham with the aim of devoting the same level of detail and attention to engineering environmental comfort as an architect applies to building design. To maintain this ethos in our work, we recruit self-starting science, engineering or mathematics graduates with a good understanding of physics and a genuine interest in design and resolving issues surrounding the servicing of a building.
Buildings are responsible for over half the carbon emissions produced by our society; we aim to minimise this impact on the environment by making use of passive design. Graduates will contribute to all areas of the wide variety of projects we undertake. The work is varied, interesting and demanding. Engineers are encouraged to generate and develop their own ideas and to handle a broad range of technical issues. They are expected to produce and communicate appropriate designs that match the aesthetic aspirations of the architect, and see them through to completion.
Engineers work in project teams and graduates are trained by senior engineers on the job. Graduate training includes site experience and attending design team meetings and seminars. Each graduate is assigned a mentor and is encouraged to work towards chartered engineer status.
Opportunities are also offered in teaching, attending and speaking at conferences, and participation in the engineering community. In recent years the practice has helped to design and shape some of the most significant building projects around the UK and Europe. Practice members have also produced several successful books.
