Graduate employer profile

Who are we?

Type of set: leading professional/clinical negligence and personal injury practice, specialising in novel duty-of-care cases involving public authorities and human rights issues. Also education, police, travel, public law and property.

Recent examples: members of Chambers have appeared in the House of Lords in the leading cases on duties owed by police, doctors and social workers; the leading case on the right to an education under the Human Rights Act; and the leading case on limitation in sexual and physical abuse claims.

We are a leading civil common law set with a busy and varied practice. We have 42 tenants having offered tenancy to both of our pupils last year. Our premises is in a prime location, on the junction of Chancery Lane with Fleet Street. Our Clerks’ Room has an excellent reputation for its helpful and friendly approach – an advantage for aspiring barristers.

We are particularly well known for our handling of professional and clinical negligence cases, personal injury actions, claims for and against public authorities including the police, education negligence, travel and property claims. We are involved in a wide range of high-profile work including stress-related claims, social welfare, human rights, housing law and health and safety.

What can we do for you?

We can offer successful applicants the opportunity to develop wide-ranging litigation skills in a stimulating and
supportive environment, working with experienced advocates involved in challenging litigation. You will be part of a team of professionals, including the instructing solicitors and experts as well as counsel. As a pupil you can expect to be involved in the full range of your pupil supervisor’s work.

What are your strengths?

In choosing our pupils we value academic and non-academic achievements as well as lucidity of expression, good communication skills and sound judgement. We do not set a minimum academic requirement, but most of our successful applicants have a first class degree or a good 2.1.

What can we offer?

We provide extensive training and appraisal during pupillage and our system of three different seats in chambers (of four months each) has proved popular with past pupils. You will be helping in the preparation of trials and applications, researching the law and drafting opinions, and attending conferences and court with your pupil supervisor. In the second six months, pupils can expect to spend two to three days in court, putting their developing skills into practice.

Chambers award

Chambers’ policy is to select new tenants from successful applicants at the end of their pupillage. On the financial side, we offer two awards of no less than £40,000 (for pupillages commencing in October 2013). In addition we will consider
advancing part of the pupillage award during the BVC.
