Turn your talent to teaching

  • Are you looking for a rewarding, stimulating career that offers training and opportunities to develop?
  • Do you want to lead a young, energetic team?
  • Do you want a job that really matters?

The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) can offer you a life as a teacher with all of these things, along with the chance to make a real impact on young lives.

You may be surprised by how rewarding a teaching career can be. With starting salaries matching what you’d receive in many other graduate professions, your experience and performance can offer you rapid progression, bringing financial rewards to match.

Becoming a teacher

Teacher training is more flexible than ever before. Anyone wanting to teach in England and Wales must complete initial teacher training (ITT). This training combines theoretical learning with at least 18 weeks practising teaching during school placements and helps you develop the skills you need to become an effective teacher.

ITT comes in all shapes and sizes, with options to suit everyone, no matter what your qualifications, experience, preferences or personal circumstances.

Options include:

  • Undergraduate training
Train to be a teacher while at university.
  • Employment-based training
Train and qualify as a teacher while working in a school.
  • Postgraduate training
Already have a degree? Qualify as a teacher in one to two years.

Support through training

If you are a graduate (or in the final year of your degree) who is thinking about teaching a secondary subject that is in demand the TDA can offer you extra support through your training, including:

  • one-to-one telephone or e-mail guidance
  • courses, visits and meetings to help you explore teaching as a career
  • support to boost your subject knowledge
  • personalised information relating to your circumstances and the subject you’d like to teach

Salary and benefits

A newly qualified teacher will earn a minimum of £21,102 (£26,000 in inner London) but could start higher up the scale depending on previous experience:

  • London fringe: £22,117 to £31,855
  • Outer London: £24,552 to £34,326
  • Inner London: £26,000 to £35,568
  • Rest of England and Wales: £21,102 to £30,842
