Join RICS
There are numerous ways of becoming a chartered surveyor, designed to suit your circumstances and requirements.
Graduate routes to membership
These routes are open to anyone with an RICS accredited degree or currently studying towards one, and with no practical experience. There are also slightly differing routes for those with an additional minimum five or 10 years’ relevant surveying experience.
Most graduate surveyors will want to gain their RICS membership as soon as possible and to do this they must undertake the APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) and record a minimum of two years’ work experience (400 days’ relevant practical experience). The average period of time a trainee takes to become qualified is between 2 and 3 years.
The APC is the practical training and experience which, when combined with academic qualifications, leads to RICS membership.
The objective is to ensure you are competent to practise as a Chartered Surveyor, and
consists of a period of structured training and a final assessment interview. Students who have a degree that is not RICS accredited can undertake a post-graduate conversion course.
By studying online or part-time, it may also be possible to enrol onto the APC during the course and gain work experience to go towards the professional qualification. To find an accredited course visit www.rics.org/courses
