Types of work

Baker & McKenzie, London is an established City firm of solicitors with a strong domestic and foreign client base providing legal services to multinational and domestic corporations, financial institutions, governments and entrepreneurs. At the heart of the firm is the Corporate department which has acknowledged expertise in international securities work, strong links with venture capital houses and has acted in relation to several privatisations.

We also have a strong local reputation in specialist areas including Intellectual Property, Information Technology, Telecoms, Employment, Pensions, Banking and Structured Capital Markets. As may be expected of a firm with a very strong international client base, we have considerable expertise in acting on, and co-ordinating, cross-border transactions and disputes.

London summer placement

The firm's summer placement opportunities are open to penultimate-year undergraduates and those in the second or third year of a four-year degree. We aim to provide you with a true insight into the culture and working atmosphere of the firm. You will spend three weeks in two separate departments, providing you with an excellent opportunity to compare the work undertaken by different areas of the firm. You will be involved in live work, receiving support and guidance from your supervisor and trainee mentor. Those on our summer placement programme also benefit from seminars and workshops co-ordinated by the firm's award-winning training department. Away from the desk, you will have the opportunity to meet with a wide range of partners, associates and trainees during social events and formal lunches.

International summer placement

The firm offers a small number of international summer placements each year, allowing you to spend between six and twelve weeks working in London and one of our overseas offices. The placement not only offers the chance to experience living and working in another country, but also the opportunity to gain exposure to work in different jurisdictions. Those on the programme gain a unique insight into the cross-border work regularly carried out by the firm. In recent years, international summer clerks have spent time in our Sydney, Singapore and Toronto offices.
