Jones Day: Mini-pupillages at at Jones Day

Jones Day operates as one firm worldwide with 2,400 lawyers in 32 offices. Jones Day in London has around 200 lawyers, including around 50 partners and 40 trainees. This means that we can offer a perfect combination – the intimacy and atmosphere of a medium-sized city firm with access to both UK and international clients.

Principal areas of practice at Jones Day include corporate finance and M&A transactions, investment funds, private equity and corporate tax planning, banking, capital markets and structured finance, business restructuring, litigation, intellectual property, and tax and real estate. The London office also has teams of lawyers who are experienced in such areas as competition/antitrust, environmental, employment and pensions law.

Training system

We operate a unique, non-rotational system of training that is designed to provide freedom, flexibility and responsibility from the start. Our trainees work across different practice areas concurrently and are encouraged to assume their own workload. This allows for early responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another.

Work placements

A placement scheme at Jones Day will give you a proper insight into how our non-rotational training system works. You’ll be given real work to do and not just a diet of seminars, visits, presentations and group exercises.

We want students to get a taste of how we operate in practice. You’ll receive work from trainees, associates and partners and you’ll be encouraged to introduce yourself to the lawyers in the firm with a view to experiencing work that you think you might be interested in and enjoy.

You’ll also meet a range of lawyers at various social events throughout the two weeks which will give you a fantastic opportunity to meet people and get to know the firm better.

At the end of your two-week scheme we want you to go away with a real feeling of having been involved in the work of a city law firm. You will have a clear picture of what being a trainee at Jones Day will be like and how our training system works. We will pay you an allowance of £400 a week.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for candidates who have obtained or are predicted at least a 2.1 degree in any discipline. We look for candidates with either a law or non-law degree, who have strong intellectual and analytical ability and good communication skills and who can demonstrate resourcefulness, drive, dedication and the ability to be a team player.

Trainee comments

'As a non-law student any placement scheme seems daunting. The open-door policy and friendly atmosphere throughout the firm meant that I never felt that I couldn't ask questions, both about the work I was doing and what it was like to be a lawyer at Jones Day.'

Jamie Lumsden – trainee.

'What struck me about the Jones Day placement scheme was how the firm managed to combine high-quality work (which everyone was keen to get me involved in) with being genuinely friendly and supportive. By the end of the two weeks I knew that this was the place I wanted to work.'

Laura Pembridge – trainee.
