RM : Work experience vacancy at RM : Industrial Placement (Software Tester)
The Role
RM's Software Development Group play an essential part in creating and maintaining our competitive advantage through effective development of high quality software products for use in education establishments.
Products developed by the area include web and server based technologies as well as internet filtering so there are a range of areas to focus on. All products must be developed and tested to high standards of quality to ensure the continued success of the RM brand.
A Software Test Engineer works within the Product Release Group (PRG) within Software Development, and is responsible for fulfilling varying responsibilities within the team, including test execution, network setup, scoping of testing requirements, planning resource on individual projects designing test plans and ensuring adherence to our testing and reporting processes, leading to the successful testing of Software Development projects.
We are looking for an Industrial Placement student to join us for an 11 month placement as part of their degree.
Responsibilities
- Execution of test scripts, using the Test Director system - this includes running tests through following scripts, logging of defects with clear information, and reporting issues.
- Creation of test scripts, from detailed design documentation.
- Test scripting, assessment and testing of documentation - this includes reviewing customer requirements, software design documentation, test plans and test scripts, to ensure defects and issues are found as early as possibly within the testing, development and release timeline.
- Installation and setup of kit - networking and commissioning of servers and network (with support, depending on experience)
- Work on process improvements - this includes adapting existing processes and introducing new techniques to improve the way PRG tests

Training and Development
Over the course of your 11 month placement you will receive a thorough induction and ongoing product and technical skills training. As well as all the technical training you'll need, there is on the job coaching which will involve working closely with your team and your mentor.
In partnership with your manager, you'll agree a personalised training and development plan.
You will attend conferences and training to discuss and understand the latest industry techniques, using this to influence the future of our team.
Qualifications and Experience
On track for a 2:1 or first class honours degree in a technically related or scientific subject, along with 260 UCAS points or equivalent.
In addition you will have:
- Excellent communication and influencing skills
- A logical approach to decision making
- A 'can do' attitude with the ability to work flexibly and on your own initiative
Preferred experience:
- Any experience of working in a customer facing role.
