Raleigh: at Raleigh:

Boost Your Employability Whilst on a Real Adventure!

“I’m sure being able to say that I successfully completed a Raleigh expedition, has certainly reflected well on me with prospective employers.” Kirsty MacLeod, Costa Rica & Nicaragua

Raleigh is a youth and education charity that runs adventure expeditions and volunteering projects in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. These last between 4 and 10 weeks and inspire 17-24 years old to join as venturers and 25s and over (up to 75!) to join as volunteer managers. Our expeditions are a challenging, but extremely rewarding combination of community, environmental and adventure projects.

Raleigh can really help set you apart from other applicants by giving you the key hard and soft skills you need to make an impact on your CV and at interview such as communication, team work, leadership and adaptability. You’ll also gain confidence, a clearer idea of your strengths and weaknesses and how you interact with people from a range of backgrounds.

Cecile Bertout works for Accenture and has always been impressed with applicants who have been on a Raleigh overseas programme.
“I have seen a large number of job applicants in an interview situation. Those who have been away on Raleigh really do stand out from the crowd. They can offer concrete examples of the sorts of skills that Accenture values highly – leadership ability, working in a team, analytical skills, and the ability to think on your feet.”
Cecile Bertout, Human Performance Manager, Accenture

‘When we see on someone’s CV that they’ve worked with Raleigh, we always get more interested. The people at innocent who have previously done Raleigh expeditions have greater confidence, enthusiasm and a belief in what can be achieved that motivates both themselves and others around them. When I am recruiting I am looking for something special in people and that is what they get from Raleigh: the gene for ingenuity’
Richard Reed, co-founder, innocent drinks

Furthermore, you’ll get the opportunity to:

  • Make a real difference - Raleigh has a permanent field base and staff in country who build relationships with host government ministries, non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) and local communities to ensure that our projects are genuinely needed, worthwhile and sustainable
  • Discover new cultures - Volunteering on sustainable projects offers a unique cultural exchange which is rare to achieve whilst travelling independently. You’ll be working alongside the communities to improve their basic sanitation or access to education and will be welcomed with open arms
  • Explore remote areas – Our partnerships in country mean that we are able to work in national parks and other areas that haven't been opened to tourists. We obtain special permits to trek through remote landscapes you couldn't access travelling independently

Recruitment process

Anyone can apply to join a Raleigh expedition as long as they are open-minded, willing to learn and up for a challenge. Our expeditions are no holiday, we like to think of them as a crash course in life!

Tim Eklund received the Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award and went on expedition to Borneo in Autumn 2009: Before Raleigh I was unemployed, newly graduated and refusing to go on benefits. For me, I’m much more flexible now than I was before and take things more as they come. I think Raleigh has given me the opportunity to demonstrate skills like leadership, communication and teamwork in different scenarios. If I were to be asked typical interview questions I could talk all day about the experiences on Raleigh.

I can’t summarize and do my experience justice in a short sentence. The Raleigh experience is simply out of the ordinary, challenging, and a great opportunity for ventures and project managers alike.

Raleigh is endorsed by leading employers and government departments, so you don’t have to feel guilty about having the time of your life!
