Hull’s economy was traditionally built on seafaring, but despite the slow decline of the fishing industry the city remains a busy port. Industry in Hull is primarily focused on the healthcare and chemical manufacturing sectors. Several wellknown British companies, such as Seven Seas Ltd, BP and Smith & Nephew, are major employers in healthcare, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, engineering and management.
The £300 million extension of the Princes Quay Shopping Centre – due for completion in 2013 – is intended to boost Hull’s commercial and financial development through the construction of around 60 new shops, meaning graduate opportunities in retail are set to increase.
Students at the University of Hull appreciate the city’s modest cost of living and the ready availability of accommodation. As a result they are among the happiest in the country, with student satisfaction high at 80 per cent, while in 2009 Hull recorded one of the biggest rises in applicants out of any university. Postgraduate subjects ranking in the top 30 include drama, geography, chemistry, English and politics.
The nearby University of Lincoln also has a campus in Hull, offering management and business courses as well as health and social care.
