Leeds, once a renowned centre of wool production, continues to establish its reputation as one of the UK’s principle professional cities. It is also considered to be the most important financial centre outside of London. Companies such as the BBC, Ernst & Young and Kroll have offices here.
Its universities are among the most popular in the country, receiving the most applications year on year, and Leeds’ student-driven nightlife will provide many affordable options for the recently graduated. There is also a great emphasis placed on festivals and parades: Big City Jazz, Leeds Pride and the Leeds West Indian Carnival are just three notable examples.
The University of Leeds is especially recognized for research and is consistently top-ranked in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, Italian, social work and town and country planning. Its business school’s MBA programme has been placed 15th in Europe.
Leeds Metropolitan University is considered to be the UK’s most sustainable university, as well as a top quality centre for sports coaching and disability sport. Communication, cultural and media studies, sport and library and information management are among those subjects that have the highest quality of teaching.
Leeds Trinity University College offers a smaller student environment and is undergoing a development programme worth more than £11m.
