Newcastle is traditionally known for its role in heavy industries such as coal mining and ship building. While the service and retail sectors have largely taken over industry in the city, big multinational companies such as Nissan and AkzoNobel still maintain a presence in Newcastle, providing local employment in engineering and manufacturing roles. In terms of retail outlets, nearby Gateshead is home to the largest shopping centre in Europe: the MetroCentre. National retailers here include Next and Marks & Spencer, with some offering graduate training schemes in store management, merchandising and buying. Newcastle itself is well known for its bustling city centre.
Newcastle has twice been named best university city in recent years, partly due to its affordable cost of living and legendary nightlife. Newcastle University recently embarked on a £200m programme of investment in its facilities and campus. Rated 24th in the country, the university makes the top five for its postgraduate courses in civil engineering, cancer studies and town planning.
Northumbria University ranks consistently well among the top new universities, running well regarded postgraduate courses in social work, business studies and general engineering.
