Oxford, the ‘city of dreaming spires’, is best known for its namesake university. And indeed, one in five of its inhabitants are students, so fresh graduates are likely to feel right at home.
The printing and publishing industries have been established here since the 1920s. Oxford University Press, Elsevier Science and Wiley Blackwell are just some of the many publishers located in the Oxfordshire region.
The city’s international appeal makes for a busy tourism and hospitality industry while Oxford’s business parks host over 40 technical and scientific companies such as Vodafone and BT. Manufacturing is another important sector with BMW Mini and Harley Davidson plants based in the city.
The University of Oxford was this year voted the best university in the country. Many of its departments are ranked as the best in the UK, including philosophy, English, business studies, music and politics.
Oxford Brookes University, the first Fairtrade university in the world, has been ranked as the UK’s leading modern university for eight years running. It has an internationally recognised publishing centre, along with top 20 rankings in tourism and hospitality, teacher training and environmental studies.
