York has a rich heritage to rival any city in the UK and its vast selection of museums, galleries and historical landmarks make it a popular destination for graduates hunting for a first job in the heritage industry or arts administration. However, the main job sector in York is the service industry, with primary employers being the NHS, City Council and universities.
The city also plays host to several large companies, such as BT and Nestlé, who have graduate training schemes available in finance, sales and marketing. Both the CPP Group and Shepherd Group are also likely to offer entrylevel roles in construction, surveying and customer service.
Although only established in 1963, the University of York is one of the top 25 universities in Europe. The institution recently doubled the size of its campus with the Heslington East development and will accommodate more students than ever next year. The university boasts the UK’s best department of research for English and rates in the top ten for archaeology, history of art and chemistry.
York St. John University offers highly rated postgraduate courses in psychology, performing arts and sports-related studies.
