Retail careers set to benefit from summer surge in high street spending

The summer sales succeeded in attracting consumers to the high street, figures released recently by Barclaycard suggest. Barclaycard found that the amount spent on credit and debit cards, in-store and online, increased by just under 10% in July compared to the same month a year earlier.

The growth is encouraging news for graduate job prospects in the retail sector. Year-on-year figures have increased steadily since the start of 2010, despite recent reports of falling consumer confidence, suggesting that there may be a gap between what consumers say about their financial prospects and their spending behaviour.

Stuart Neal, head of Barclaycard UK Payment Acceptance, said, ‘If consumer confidence is taking a hit, it’s not happening on the high street. If spending remains at this level compared to last year, 2010 could prove overall to be a very good year for retailers.’

The Barclaycard Spending Index is based on spending on all credit and debit cards across 44 retail sectors at retailers that use Barclaycard Payment Acceptance to process transactions.
