The most sought after graduate employers among solicitors’ firms have been revealed after they were shortlisted for the TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards 2011. The winning law firm will be chosen by an online student poll conducted by the trendence institute and announced at the end of March.
The firms shortlisted in the law (solicitors) category are:
Allen & Overy LLP employs approximately 5,000 staff, including 470 partners, working in 36 major centres worldwide. The international legal practice is particularly known for its expertise in banking, corporate and international capital markets advice and, as such, trainees tend to spend at least half of their two-year training contract in these areas.
Clifford Chance LLP is one of the largest international law firms in the world. Trainees get the chance to try seats in three or four of the following areas of practice: corporate; capital markets; banking and finance; real estate; litigation and dispute resolution; and tax, pensions and employment. Clifford Chance were one of the law firms to advise on the Kraft takeover of Cadbury.
DLA Piper LLP is one of the world’s largest commercial law firms with regional offices in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield – as well as offices overseas. It has 3,500 lawyers working worldwide. The firm expects to have approximately 85 vacancies for training contracts starting in 2013.
Eversheds LLP has 4,100 people working in its offices in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The law firm’s main areas of work include: company commercial; litigation and dispute management; real estate; and employment and pensions. The firm runs two-week summer placements in its UK offices.
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is looking to take on 90 trainee solicitors at its Fleet Street offices in 2013, split between two intakes in February and August. Trainees who join its London training programme can move departments every three months and experience a range of practice areas: corporate; finance; dispute resolution; real estate; intellectual property/IT; tax; employment, pensions and benefits; and antitrust, competition and trade.
Herbert Smith is large City law firm known for its expertise in dispute resolution (sometimes known as litigation) and corporate law, among other practice areas. It has over 1,400 lawyers and 25 FTSE 100 clients. The firm encourages lawyers to take overseas secondments during their career – the latest Herbert Smith overseas office to open is in Madrid.
Linklaters LLP is a global law firm with 19 practices across 26 cities. Whether trainees are law graduates or non-law graduates, their training contract is built around six-month seats in four different practice areas. Two-thirds of Linklaters’ trainees experience a seat in one of the firm’s international offices or a client secondment. The firm offers summer vacation placements for law students and winter vacation placements for non-law students.
Pinsent Masons LLP has offices in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. This law firm typically recruits around 60 trainees each year and offers summer vacation placements. Twenty per cent of the firm’s trainee solicitors go on client secondment to organisations such as John Lewis and Cable & Wireless.
Simmons & Simmons is an international law firm, well known for its legal expertise in energy and infrastructure, finance, life sciences and technology. It offers a variety of work experience opportunities: a winter insight workshop aimed at non-law final-year students and graduates; and a spring vacation scheme for first-year law students and penultimate year non-law students. Penultimate-year law students and final year non-law students are advised to apply for the summer vacation scheme.
Slaughter and May is one of the world’s leading international law firms with an extensive corporate, commercial and financing practice. The firm has 128 partners and approximately 1,200 people, of whom over 400 are associates and 192 are trainees. There are opportunities to work in places such as Amsterdam, Auckland, Brussels, Berlin, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Madrid, Milan, New York, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Stockholm, Sydney and Tokyo.
