You are here: Home: News: Tech sector strong overall, as e-commerce grows and public sector IT shrinks
Computer science graduates take note: the e-commerce sector is continuing to experience strong growth, according to a new report, making it a good bet for graduate IT jobs.
The Online Trends 2011 report was compiled in December 2011 at the Centre for Retail Research, Nottingham, on behalf of internet shopping site Kelkoo. It found that online retail sales in the UK grew by 14% in 2011, to over £50bn. The sector now accounts for 12% of total retail spending in the UK. The report also predicts another 14% of growth for 2012.
In a related announcement, Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini commented that growth in internet traffic had contributed to the company’s positive financial results, for example providing high demand for its Data Center business. Intel recently reported growth of 13% in its net income from 2010 to 2011.
Unsurprisingly, public sector IT is faring less well at the moment. Around 5,000 public sector IT jobs were lost in 2011, according to a report by Socitm, a membership association for public sector IT workers.
Overall IT remains one of the healthier sectors in the UK. The latest Report on Jobs, compiled by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, names IT and technology as one of the employment sectors staying strong.
