Looking for your property, real estate or land surveying summer internship or sandwich year placement for 2012? You'll be glad to know that there are vacancies being advertised on TARGETjobs Property online. These include:
Getting property-related experience work experience is all but essential for getting a graduate surveying job. In fact, Grosvenor only accepts graduate job applications from those who have completed an internship with the firm, and Knight Frank take your property work experience into account when assessing your graduate job application.
So, how to write an impressive application for work experience with a property firm? For most opportunities, you have to submit a CV, sometimes via an online application form.
Pack your CV full of the skills property recruiters want: even for work experience, recruiters want to know that you have the skills to make a good surveyor – so tell them that. If writing a chronological CV, list the skills you developed when detailing your work experience history and extra-curricular activities. You need to focus on the skills that that particular recruiter want. Our Employer Insight reports list the competencies sought by some major players within the property industry. If there isn’t one for your employer, use our feature on the skills property recruiters look for as a guide.
State a specific reason for applying for an internship with that employer: in your covering letter or on the application form, ensure the reasons given for applying to that firm are unique to that firm. Avoid generic platitudes such as wanting to gain experience at a ‘prestigious employer’. Instead, find out something specific or different about the firm and write about why that appeals to you – it could be the structure of the internship (the departments you’ll sit in, the work you’ll do), the type of business the firm does or its recent transactions/projects.
