Forward-thinking technology centre to create graduate jobs in the Midlands

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, due to open next summer, will help to put the Midlands at the forefront of global manufacturing research and is expected to create or safeguard 2,100 jobs over ten years.

The MTC will allow businesses to test new techniques and manufacturing methods prior to full-scale production. Dave Smith, the Birmingham area director of Morgan Sindall, the contractors building the centre, described it as ‘a forward-thinking facility which will help Coventry become the envy of the engineering industry.’

Industries that will benefit from the MTC include aerospace, automotive, energy, electronics, and heavy duty construction equipment companies. The MTC will be operated by a partnership that includes the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Loughborough University and TWI Limited, the operating division of the Welding Institute. The founder industrial members of the partnership are Rolls-Royce, Aero Engine Controls and Airbus UK.

Dr Hamid Mughal, the executive vice president of manufacturing, engineering and technology at Rolls-Royce, commented, ‘Work has already started with our partners on exciting research projects which will help the competitiveness of manufacturing in this country and we look forward to these transferring to the MTC next year.’
