There’s been plenty of encouraging news this summer for students who want graduate careers in engineering and technology. Hard evidence that the aerospace industry is thriving was provided by the Farnborough International Airshow, which takes place every two years. Orders for aircraft were down from the 2008 record, which marked the peak of the boom, but were slightly higher than for the previous Airshow, in 2006.
Business secretary Vince Cable used his opening speech at the Airshow to emphasise the government’s commitment to supporting the sector. He said aerospace had a central role to play in rebalancing the UK economy and rebuilding its export strength, and flagged up the enormous potential gains British firms could make from leading the way in the transition to low carbon technology
Mr Cable also paid tribute to the UK’s strength in the space and security industries. A report published earlier this year by the Space Growth and Innovation Team said that the UK space sector supports more than 45,000 graduate jobs and grew by an average of 9% each year between 1999 and 2007.
The government is keen to attract fresh talent to another sector in need of the skills of science, engineering and technology students and graduates: cyber security. The first Cyber Security Challenge UK, a series of online and face-to-face competitions designed to attract newcomers to the profession, was launched this month.
The minister for security, the Rt Hon Baroness Neville-Jones, said at the launch, ‘Defending all of our interests in cyberspace is a relatively small cadre of talented and highly skilled public sector and private sector cyber security professionals. This pool of professionals must grow and the Cyber Security Challenge UK offers an innovative and exciting way of attracting talented individuals to take up rewarding careers in this field.’
Over the last two months, we’ve reported on news of graduate recruitment in engineering, science and technology across the UK:
