What qualifications do I need to get into property?

You can qualify as a chartered surveyor no matter what subject you studied.

To work in the property sector you need to have a property-related qualification – but this doesn’t have to be your first degree. There are two entry routes:

A property-related degree

You might have a degree in estate management, building surveying, construction management or similar. This is the most straightforward route – working in property is the next logical step after a related degree. Some firms only recruit graduates who have done a property-related degree but this isn’t always the case. Note that your degree must be accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) if you want to become chartered. And if you want to get anywhere in the profession, you’re going to need to be chartered.

A degree that’s not related to property

Your first degree must be followed by a conversion course to teach you the necessary skills and knowledge. This takes one year full time or two years part time. Again, it must be accredited by RICS if you wish to become chartered. Some firms will provide sponsorship for a conversion course – you’ll study part time while working, and do your APC at the same time. Many firms actively recruit graduates with an unrelated degree – known as non-cognates – because of the additional skills and different perspective they bring to the workplace. In addition, graduates who are actively choosing the profession tend to be more committed to it. It can help to have relevant skills in your first degree. Popular subjects include economics, geography, languages, science and social sciences.
