There are many small, specialist companies in the UK that operate as specialist software houses and technical consultancies. Many recruit technical graduates for entry-level jobs.
Large organisations often need to bring in experts who have the technology expertise to help them solve an IT problem or to gain a different viewpoint on how they can use technology to run their business more effectively – that’s where consultants come in, and there are a vast variety covering all IT systems.
Other companies pioneer or develop existing software to meet a specific business need, and then sell their product or work closely with larger organisations to provide their services – this is the role of the niche software house.
Small tech companies need quick-learning, adaptable graduates
Graduates need to be capable of learning quickly and have a good technology grounding. Some software houses can also provide havens for the unashamedly ‘techie’ graduate (happy to be immersed in the minutia of specialist programming), while others will require client-facing skills. All consultants, on the other hand, need to be able to talk to clients in appropriate language without baffling them with jargon. Company websites and recruitment literature will often give you a good feel for the company ethos, and the types of graduate they look for.

Niche software houses and consultancies are less likely to advertise positions in the national press, so look out for adverts in industry publications and on specialist recruitment websites. An active interest in their technical and/or business area is a must. Science parks will house a lot of these companies, so local recruitment advertising can also find you a way in.

Small organisations can also be pretty agile and able to adapt to changes in market conditions - ready to seize new opportunities. However, they can also get shaken about in the storms - look for a strong management team, good track record and rational business plan.
