Vacation scheme deadlines

Don’t miss vacation scheme deadlines this winter

Vacation scheme deadlines are now scattered between October and March to keep you on your toes. We’ve put together a list of the need-to-know deadlines along with links to each recruiter’s information.
Common deadlines for summer placements fall at the end of December and January, so it’s best to plan ahead.

Vacation schemes are a significant (and sometimes essential) part of the recruitment process for most large law firms. When you finally arrive at an interview for a training contract, you will be asked what you like about the solicitors’ firm and what sort of legal work they do. The best way to obtain that knowledge is to spend between one and three weeks on a firm’s vac scheme (also known as a vacation placement but never, in this sector, as an internship).

Most law firms offer these structured work experience programmes to second- or final-year law and non-law students, and tend to pay a subsidy of £250–£350 per week. Typically, firms offer winter vacation schemes to finalists and graduates, and summer vacation schemes to penultimate-year students, but it’s worth checking individual firms’ requirements by clicking on the links below. Common deadlines for summer placements fall at the end of December and January, so if you want to enjoy your Christmas break it’s best to plan ahead.

We quizzed the following firms about their vac scheme deadlines when putting together TARGETjobs Law 2016. Here’s what they told us:
