Recently, Lancashire county council has revealed plans for a £430m government-funded development project to attract new businesses and investment in the Preston and South Ribble areas, which could create up to 20,000 jobs.

The city is a major centre for the defence and aerospace industry, with BAE Systems seeking graduates of engineering and manufacturing-related degrees. Westinghouse Springfields is a nuclear energy company which is also a significant employer in the energy and engineering sectors.

Postgraduate study in and around Preston

The fifth biggest university in the country, the University of Central Lancashire (UClan) recently spent £60m improving and expanding its facilities. Its recently refurbished student union houses one of the largest student venues in the country. In recent years, the university has taken big strides with its research ratings. Nursing and social work courses score well on research, as do library and information management, and engineering.
