Chambers is seeking to recruit up to four twelve-month pupils to commence in October 2018, each receiving an award of £65,000 (plus any fees earned by the pupil), up to £20,000 of which may be drawn during the BPTC year. 3VB has traditionally used the Pupillage Gateway, but this is currently under review and applicants should check on 3VB’s website for details on how to apply.
Commercial practice is intellectually demanding and 3VB seeks the brightest and the best. The typical successful applicant will have a first or upper second class degree (commonly not in law) from a top university, with good mooting experience and proven experience of the commercial bar (generally through mini-pupillages with us or elsewhere). Many have a master’s degree or other significant legal or commercial experience, with several of our tenants being former bankers, accountants, solicitors etc.
We are committed to recruiting new tenants from our pupils whenever we can. Accordingly, we offer pupillage only to those who we hope and expect will become tenants. Although tenancy is offered to all pupils who make the grade, on average two pupils are successful in any one year.
As with other leading commercial sets, our junior tenants are often led in the most important and complex pieces of commercial litigation of the moment. Unlike many of the other leading commercial sets, our new tenants also get a lot of experience running their own smaller banking and insolvency cases.
Two day mini-pupillages are an important part of our selection procedure and we strongly encourage prospective applicants for pupillage to apply for a mini-pupillage (e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, attaching a detailed CV). The ideal time to apply is at the start of the academic year immediately preceding the BPTC year, but we will consider applications before then.
