Allen & Overy is a pre-eminent global law firm, operating in over thirty countries around the world. We’re the only firm to have featured in the top five of the Financial Times Innovative Law Firm Awards every year since its creation, and the only firm to have won it four times.
The legal industry is changing fast, and we’re working to equip our people with the skills and knowledge they will need to operate in the legal landscape of the future. For our trainees, this means an in-house training programme characterised by flexibility and choice.
A&O Training Contract
As a trainee, you can expect a rewarding experience that will prepare you for a career at the very pinnacle of the profession. In each of your rotations (known as ‘seats’), you’ll support a senior associate or partner, with exposure to work that crosses departments and borders – in fact, 73% of the firm’s work involves two or more jurisdictions. Around 80% of trainees have the chance to spend six months in one of our 44 overseas offices, or on secondment to one of our various clientele – who include 87% of Forbes’ top 100 public companies.
Your A&O Training Contract will be based on four six-month seats through a number of departments or practice areas, where you will sit with a partner or a senior associate. Seats are available in all our practice areas, allowing trainees to experience the full range of work we do, with the priority seat system enabling you to spend time in an area that is of particular interest. Our core transactional areas of expertise are Banking, Corporate and International Capital Markets, and as a trainee you will spend at least 12 months of your Training Contract gaining experience in at least two of these areas.
What we look for
We welcome people who are intellectually curious, entrepreneurial and agile; people who aren’t afraid to go beyond their comfort zone, and want to work at the forefront of their profession. You should be ready to embrace change, have a talent for problem-solving, and be keen to develop broad commercial awareness outside your chosen specialism.
Whatever you’ve studied – and around half our trainees have a degree in a subject other than law – we will help you develop into an exceptional lawyer and learn to do work of the highest possible standard. You’ll need to be on track to achieve, or have achieved, a 2:1 degree and 340 UCAS points (AAB), or equivalent, and have a genuine interest in law.
Rewards & Benefits
The current salary for first year trainees is £44,000 rising to £49,000 in the second year of training. The current salary on qualification is £81,000. We also offer a range of benefits, such as 25 days’ annual leave, private medical insurance, public transport season ticket loan, life insurance, complimentary on-site fitness centre, gym, sports hall and a wide range of exercise classes.
Training Contract applications can be made between 1 October and 31 December 2017. When applying, you will be asked to state which year you will be available to start at Allen & Overy (in either March or September).
