"A&O genuinely cares about diversity and social mobility as evidenced by the Smart Start programme, which is great."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm puts a strong emphasis on these issues but there remains an imbalance of male to female partners."
First year trainee, London
"We have excellent trainees with disabilities, the firm really goes above and beyond to address their problems and make sure they will not miss out on any training that A&O has on offer. A&O is extremely active on the LGBT scene and we often organise events (internal ones and some with external guests). In terms of ethnicity, it would be difficult to find a more diverse firm than A&O. The firm also runs loads of programmes focused on social mobility with both trainees and seniors being very actively involved."
Second year trainee, London but currently on an international secondment
"My intake was very diverse."
First year trainee, London
"Considering it's a major law firm, its stats on female partnership are not great, but are improving. I think the firm's policies and actions on diversity are fairly equivalent to most other major law firms."
Second year trainee, London, but on currently on secondment to Singapore.
"There has been a real push recently with the re launch of A&Out; (LGBT network) and WiN (women's international network). We run Smart Start (a programme encouraging and helping young adults from less privileged backgrounds to consider and get into careers like law). Our senior and managing partners are hands-on with diversity."

"The entire legal sector still has some way to go to move away from the 'white middle class male' stereotype but these things take time and we are most definitely moving in the right direction."
First year trainee, London
"This is seen as a priority and a strength."
First year trainee, London
"There are lots of policies to help women in work."
Second year trainee, London
"A&O has a number of great societies on this front. A&Out; is our LGBT society that recently re-launched with a speech by Ben Cohen. We're aiming to have 20% female partners by 2020."
First year trainee, London
"The firm takes this very seriously. There are dedicated support groups for minorities and the firm has set goals to increase the number of women partners."
First year trainee, London
"There is a good A&Out; programme for the firm's LGBT and friends of LGBT community. Maternity leave seems well provided for and the national and ethnic diversity seems deeply embedded."
First year trainee, London
"The recent re-launch of A&Out; with encouragement for heterosexual and cisgender colleagues to sign up as allies is fantastic. A&O really means it when it comes to issues of diversity. Smartstart is a brilliant commitment to social mobility that people really believe in here. It's all very genuine."
Second year trainee, London
"A&O has made this a strategic priority this year and the LGBT visibility in the firm has really increased over the last few months in particular."
First year trainee, London

2015

"The firm offers flexible working hours and working from home, good maternity leave and has a good commitment to getting more women into senior jobs."
First year trainee, London
"Diversity initiatives are very visible and flexible working is encouraged. Perhaps more could be done on paternity leave though."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm employs a good mix of women and men. Personally I have not much experience with the LGBT initiatives but am aware of them. There could be more non-Oxbridge trainees though."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm definitely make a real effort with regards to diversity. We have an LGBT group, a programme to promote women in senior positions and very good maternity policies. This is definitely a strength for the firm."
First year trainee, London
"The firm has lots of female trainees and solicitors but the firm has a very low number of female partners. Seems fairly diverse regarding ethnic minorities."
Second year trainee, London
