The Allianz Management Trainee scheme really stood out to me because it allows you to rotate across different areas of the business with four placements over two years.
My first placement was a technical one in motor fleet underwriting (determining risk and calculating premiums) which helped me really understand how the business functions at the front end. My second placement was in the operations development team where, among other projects, I was responsible for the creation of a graduate placement portfolio. My third placement, which is coming to an end now, was back in the commercial side of the business in the strategic account management team. My final placement will be in claims proposition and change - I’m looking forward to working on some of the new claims propositions we’ll be introducing.
I’ve really enjoyed the amount of exposure to senior management that I’ve received. As part of my second placement I created a communications plan for the operations development area which led to a website redesign – I had to talk through my designs with the most senior stakeholders in the business.
Allianz offers study leave and workshops to help us study for the Advanced Diploma for Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII). It has its own in-house training programme which has various CII accredited modules. As part of the programme we are also automatically assigned a performance manager and mentor who offers support and advice on our performance and long-term career plans.
Having excellent social skills and the ability to work alongside a range of people, regardless of their seniority, is crucial because developing a strong network will help your career progression.
