I wanted a graduate job which had practical applications and tangible outcomes. I've always been interested in the built environment and the impressive development within cities around the world so I started to explore different professions within the construction industry. Through attending different networking events, I heard all about Arcadis and the graduate scheme. I knew straight away that Arcadis would be a great company to start my career with when I discovered the huge range of projects which Arcadis is involved with, from airports, hospitals and hotels to motorways and rail development. I'd love to live abroad and Arcadis has 28,000 employees working across 70 countries so there are many different opportunities to work on projects all over the world.
I have been at Arcadis for a year now and am involved with a number of different residential projects within London. These projects offer really varied work; one day I will be on site to undertake a valuation or attend a progress meeting, the next I will be in the office looking over all the latest project drawings to help put together a cost plan. There is always something new to learn and this is supported by my postgraduate course at London South Bank University which is paid for by Arcadis. I find this combination of on-the-job learning and university study really beneficial to my understanding of the construction industry and the many different processes and challenges that we deal with on projects.
Arcadis has a strong graduate community and is really switched on to engaging with and learning from its new generation of employees. A great example of this is the annual Global Shapers programme which sees 100 people from Arcadis offices all over the world come together to focus on new challenges. This year, I am lucky enough to be travelling to Qatar to take part in the programme - it's a brilliant opportunity to learn from people all over the world and develop something exciting and valuable for our business. A great perk of the job!
I think Arcadis offers really fantastic professional development, emphasises the importance of teamwork and collaboration and provides great opportunities to get away from your desk and get involved with wider business development.
