Our Consulting Practice is made up of the Planning, Management Consulting and Technology sub-Practices, between them hosting 16 individual groups. The Venues team provides design and planning advice to arts, culture & entertainment clients around the built environment – for experiences, places, buildings, and districts.  Projects range from visitor experience planning in city neighbourhood scale development strategies working closely with urban planners and city economics, community place making projects, explorations around the evolution of the use public facilities to the design of new build international theatre and concert venues.

About the role

We are looking for a Graduate Consultant to join our team of bright professionals in our London office. From your first day, you’ll join an unrivalled community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification.

As part of the Venues team you will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients. Your project involvement will be extremely diverse and you will be working across a wide variety of markets including performing arts, education, visual arts, and commercial developments. Under supervision, you will be expected to formulate strategy for new venues and undertake space planning, provide high quality planning and design information and support implementation through early operations. You will also interface with other groups within Arup including City Economics and Urban Planning.

You will have the opportunity to gain a broad range of experience in the UK and abroad.You will be engaged on a portfolio of projects, working with different teams and ranging in scale, duration and design stage, providing you with a diverse working environment.

Typical responsibilities could include:

  • Research and benchmarking for strategic planning for arts, culture & entertainment
  • Input to operational and experiential requirements for performing or visual arts planning
  • Technical document preparation and presentation for clear communication with design teams and users
  • Provide high quality deliverables within time constraints
  • Undertake drawing and modelling work
  • Develop innovative solutions within constraints of project budgets
  • Contribute to and review designs of other parties
  • Interface with operators of operators of arts, culture & entertainment venues to develop understanding, build consensus and facilitate decision making

The role is part of a team of specialists, where the graduate would learn and develop skills across all areas including and understanding of venue technical systems.

What we look for

We are looking for graduates with an understanding of the dynamics of the economic/experiential drivers within the arts, culture & entertainment sector through first-hand experience. We are looking for people with curiosity and personal drive to influence the way the built environment shapes experience.

We’re looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills:

  • Enthusiasm for the design of facilities for the performing arts and / or other related sectors
  • Good degree in an appropriate subject (e.g. architecture, planning, cultural planning)
  • Experience of working in performing arts or events production or management
  • Proficiency in use of Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Proficiency in use of AutoCad and Revit (desirable)
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Good time management and ability to work concurrently on multiple projects
  • Excellent communications skills (eg written, verbal, drawing , infographic, photographic and face-to-face)
  • Keen sense of maintaining high standards
  • Creative in developing solutions that respond to multiple requirements
  • Knowledge of the construction industry
  • Ability to maintain personal effectiveness and team relationships at times of significant pressure
