What have been your key achievements since joining Atkins?
Since joining Atkins I have been involved in projects such as developing the air to air refuelling system for the US air force KC-46 tanker and structural analysis of Airbus A330 and A340 landing gear, whether it be providing structural justification for a design modification or verifying fatigue life.
I feel that my greatest achievement in my first year at Atkins was my work as part of the reactive support team at Airbus. This involved reviewing supplier repair concessions and loads sustained during hard landings to determine whether each individual component was safe to return to service. My first rotation on the graduate scheme allowed me to forge ever closer relationships with clients and I felt privileged to be trusted to present the results of my work to senior management, especially at such an early stage in my Atkins career. .
What attracted you to Atkins?
For me, the deciding factor when selecting a graduate scheme was the variety of work on offer. Joining a consultancy like Atkins gives me the freedom to take on roles that are both interesting and provide a constant challenge. As a multi-disciplinary engineering firm, there are also opportunities to get involved with projects that you would not ordinarily have exposure to at other companies. Consequentially, there is a great exchange of information throughout the different business sectors and ample opportunity to further your knowledge of the wider engineering world and develop skills that may be difficult to attain elsewhere. Having already enjoyed my time working on two projects, I am very much looking forward to my next rotation, and the challenges they provide, whatever they may be.
Another major draw for me was Atkins’ emphasis on chartership and the support which is given to enable each individual to achieve chartered status within their chosen accrediting body. Since joining Atkins I have found it to be a great benefit in being assigned a mentor to me through the process with regular meetings to review progress.
What other activities have you been involved with?
Atkins have supported and encouraged my involvement in many STEM activities, with my particular highlight being the Flying Start Challenge. This involved weekly visits to schools and presenting a basic theory of flight to the pupils and helping them to design and build a model glider. Each glider was flown at a regional final, where the team also had to take part in a quiz and present what they had learned over the course of the challenge and how the knowledge they had gained helped to shape their design. All three aspects were scored with the top three teams from each regional final progressing to a grand final at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil.
As a committee member of the flying start challenge I took great pride in my role in helping to both organise the event, and motivate the pupils. The grand final was a great success and I was delighted to be part of a team that hopefully will inspire the next generation of engineers.
