What have been your key achievements since joining Atkins?

I joined Atkins in September 2016 as a graduate straight out of University. Joining the Nuclear Decommissioning Team based in Bristol I was immediately tasked with working as part of a small team of graduates to produce a literature review on nuclear waste disposal methods for a client in Japan. Since then I have worked on a wide range of projects across a variety of sectors and locations including: a finite element contact modelling problem in the Rotherham office, managing a bus service contract, helping bid for roles and projects and negotiating value with a supplier. Most recently I’ve been travelling to Swindon to provide management support to the Great Western Electrification Program.

What attracted you to Atkins?

Starting my career I knew only one thing: I wanted to work in Engineering. As I had very little industry experience I honestly had no idea what areas I would enjoy. I sought out an employer who could provide exposure to as much variety as possible – this is what lead me to Atkins. Working in a huge number of sectors, from Aerospace to Water and Ground with everything between, I knew that working at Atkins would provide me with ample opportunities to move around the business. With strong links to its offices and teams across the globe Atkins also provides opportunities to take your career abroad, something I found very appealing.

What other activities have you been involved with?

Atkins has a very active graduate community with regular social events and meetups that I have enjoyed taking part in. It’s not just pub trips (although there are plenty of those) – there’s been Zorb football, hiking in Wales, climbing trips, sports fixtures, trips to comedy clubs… it’s not just the work that’s varied at Atkins! I’ve enjoyed it all so much I’ve taken on a position within the GAP (Graduates, Apprentices and Placements) committee, the group responsible for organising many of the graduate events. This includes the monthly forum in which GAPs meet up to touch base, discussing topical issues and sharing advice with each other over a free lunch.
