Energy - Process, Chemical & Environmental Graduate Scheme (2018)

What you'll be doing

We have opportunities for graduates across a range of our Energy teams in the UK.  From a Chemical, Process or Environmental background, you could be working in one of the following teams, here’s a little about what they do;

Aberdeen –  based here you’ll be focused on projects primarily in the Oil and Gas market, as a process/Chemical engineer you could be involved in; working with North Sea operators in supporting them in their brownfield modification projects and/or operational support work in their daily production.  This is a dynamic environment ensuring that code requirements, production efficiency and safe operations are maintained using innovative approaches to assets which, in some cases are 40 years old, operating efficiently and safely pushing your knowledge and capability to the full extent.

Bristol Process – As part of the process team in Bristol you could be involved in designing systems for the new reactor at Hinkley point, specifying upgrades for existing reactors or wide variety of other projects. You may write system descriptions, technical specifications and be involved in multidiscipline teams delivering design optimisation. Right now we are working on upgrades to a liquid carbon dioxide cooling system, detail design for a semiconductor plant, writing technical specifications for water treatment systems, and running projects to deliver solid waste processes and backup diesel generations systems. We also are seeing more work arising from the wind power industry and have carried out design reviews and technical assessment to support floating offshore installations.  We are looking for candidates with a Master’s/MEng degree in Chemical or Process Engineering.

Whitehaven/Bristol - Our environmental teams in Bristol and Whitehaven work on radioactive waste management, radiological protection and UK nuclear environmental legislation across new build, generation and decommissioning markets in the nuclear industry. We provide solutions to our clients to ensure they safely manage radioactive waste, and protect their workers, the public and the environment from radiation exposure and contamination. We are instrumental in the delivery of environmental permit applications for nuclear new build operators and we utilise our UK regulatory requirement expertise to support nuclear reactor vendors through their Generic Design Applications.  We also provide permitting support and advice for other types of sites. Some of our key clients include; Sellafield, EDF generation, NNB GenCo, Horizon Nuclear Power and Magnox. You will learn how workers, the public and the environment are kept safe in the nuclear industry, and apply your knowledge to recommending solutions in line with UK best practice and environmental legislation to make sure this happens.  We are looking for candidates from an Environmental Science background ideally, or a Physics/Chemical/Chemistry background, with modules in the relevant field.

Epsom – Based here as a graduate process/chemical engineer you could be based in either the fluids or safety team. In the fluids team, you will find yourself working on projects in a wide array of industries, with a focus on our parent Energy business (in the Oil and Gas, Offshore Wind and Nuclear markets). Some of our recent projects include Prelude FLNG and Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm.  We also provide analysis to support large infrastructure projects; notable examples include the Thames Tideway storm tunnel system and the Doha Metro rapid transit system in Qatar. We’re looking for candidates who have a strong aptitude for fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Based in our safety team you will be working on projects in the Nuclear and Oil & Gas markets.  Some of our recent project work has been in support of new nuclear facilities in the UK and for oil & gas operators in central Asia.  We’re looking for candidates who have a chemical engineering or nuclear related degree.

Glasgow - Based in our Glasgow or Bellshill office as a graduate process engineer, you will find yourself working primarily on projects in the Offshore Engineering and Power Generation markets. Some of our current projects include Flare & Relief Verification work for Clients in the North Sea and Asia Pacific region as well verification and design of specific plant sections on an Energy from Waste site. We’re looking for candidates who are eager to learn our simulation software as well as a keen interest in Process design, integrity of aging plants and are keen to work across the Energy sectors. 

Warrington – As a graduate process engineer in the Energy Warrington office you could be working on an array of interesting and challenging projects both inside and outside of the nuclear industry. In the current team, we are working on projects in the oil & gas and semi-conductor industries in addition to nuclear submarines. Our portfolio of projects is ever adapting to the needs of our clients and will give you a diverse experience of process engineering. Some of the work we complete for our clients includes authoring technical specifications, carrying out feasibility studies, optioneering, tender evaluation and independent design review/verification. The team can also support clients in equipment selection and specification, fluid & particle dynamics, compressible/incompressible flows, plant optimisation and process review, energy mass balance calculations, hazard identification and assessments, safety system design, HAZOP chairs, front end and detailed design together with on-site support to name but a few.

In addition to some of the responsibilities you can see above for specific locations - As a graduate engineer, you could also be involved in;

  • Supporting on some major projects across various areas of Energy from nuclear decommissioning, new power generation and transmission, to offshore, wave and tidal energy
  • Reviewing and developing designs to improve plants, equipment, structures and Energy related systems
  • Carrying out surveys and site inspections, building strong client relationships
  • Using a variety of engineering software packages, as well as 2D and 3D modelling for new designs and modifications
  • Producing safety cases, reports and documentation to support the planning, design, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of Energy facilities
  • Carrying out design and assessment for new build projects as well as additions, modifications and repairs to existing assets.
  • Attending graduate networks & forums to help shape our scheme & graduate community activities

Who we're looking for

You’ll be a talented graduate with a minimum 2.2 Masters/MEng degree in a relevant degree discipline (please check each location for suitable degrees)

You’ll have ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical skills and achieve Chartered status.  With a passion for working in a consultancy environment, you’ll want to work with customers and with teams who deliver to their customers and you’ll be adaptable and happy to cope with uncertainty.  Communication and team-working will be your key skills as well as having the ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions.
