Successfully recruited through the following process: online application form, psychometric tests, video interview, assessment centre including two role play scenarios and an interview, interview at the division with Directors, interview at the division with Managing Director.
Why? Keen interest in the property and housebuilding industry and desire to understand all areas of the business.
- What does your role involve? What are your typical activities and key responsibilities?
Learning the workings and operations of six key departments of the business: Land, Technical, Commercial, Sales and Marketing, and Finance. Additional responsibilities: charity coordinator for my division, Campus Team Lead for the 2017/18 campaign, organising events for West Midlands division i.e. Charity Sportsman’s Dinner for 2017 and 2018, Year End Party, Christmas Party, Pantomime.
- What training have you received?
Regular development days and training courses with members of the graduate cohort. Department specific training arranged by the division has involved a Land Academy Masterclass (Land); Placement with Nicol Thomas Architects and with Travis Baker Engineering (Technical); ORJ Solicitor training and day with PR Agency Unsworth Sugden (Sales). Online learning modules relating to each department also available to work through in the office.
- If the you're on a structured/formal scheme, what does this involve?
Year 1: Six two month rotations in different departments of the business: Land, Technical, Commercial, Construction, Sales and Marketing, Finance.
Year 2: Specialise in your chosen department.
- What are the highlights of the work the you've done?
Land: Understanding the land buying process - identifying sites, market research, planning, working with landowners and agents, understanding competitors, viabilities, hurdle rates, and submission of a bid.
Technical: Two sides – engineering and design. Layout design, reading and interpreting different drawings, familiarity with Barratt housetypes.
Commercial: Subcontractor procurement, Valuation, Estimation, Cost Plans, the role of the Buying team.
Construction: Out on site with the Site Manager understanding how a construction site is managed and run, timescales and stages of Housebuild, roles and responsibilities of the trades, and familiarity with the finished product. 2 weeks in Customer Care dealing with customers making and receiving calls
Finance: Understanding the Cash flow, Budget and Forecasting, Profit and Loss Statement, 3 Year Plan.
Sales: Experience in Head Office with Sales and Marketing teams, with on-site Sales Advisers to understand the buying process, and with external companies such as PR agencies and solicitors.

Variation – no two days are the same
Rotational nature – provides exposure to all areas of the business which allows you to understand the entire process from start to finish and the contribution of each department at various stages throughout.
Exposure to senior management and opportunity to progress within the company.
- What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome any difficult situations – what support has been provided?
Balancing divisional work with graduate scheme responsibilities was sometimes difficult. There is always a lot of support from employees within the division however.
