"As a first-seat trainee, it is to be expected that many of the tasks will be fairly menial and boring. However, I have had a chance to do some first draft of board minutes and resolutions etc."
First year trainee, London
"I have an ongoing project, which I work on with another trainee, that involves contract negotiation and I get a lot of work from my supervisor who focuses on real estate finance. I have a very steady flow of work and I feel like I've learned a lot already."
First year trainee, London
"Depending on department, you are encouraged to get work from as many fee earners as possible so you can, to some extent, control the type of work you pick up. This is great if you have an interest in something. I've also been given a lot of autonomy on other pieces of work and client contact. Work generally feels important rather than something that is getting in the way of the business. I have never had to do really tedious work as we have teams who do copying and document preparation. That said, I have done my fair share of proofing."
Second year trainee, London
"I'm really satisfied. I've been given a variety of different tasks, most of which are very interesting."
Second year trainee, London
"It varies. Some days I'll be given some good tasks while other days are different."
First year trainee, London
"I would like to be drafting documents more than I am, as most of my tasks are research-based or administrative. Having said that, I have had a fair amount of client contact."
Second year trainee, London
"The quality of work varies by department. There are inevitably more administrative tasks to do in bigger departments but fee earners are happy to get you involved on weightier tasks and take on more responsibility where possible. In smaller departments, you are given considerable responsibility from the start, which is very rewarding."

"I have had very good client interaction and trust/responsibility to liaise with clients. My day-to-day responsibilities are varied and can sometimes be very challenging which is a positive."
Second year trainee, London
"I have had quite a high level of client interaction, and my day-to-day responsibilities can range from the very administrative to very in depth complex legal drafting."
Second year trainee, London
"There is a huge range of work to get involved in within Commercial and everyone is happy to help guide you to give you a broad experience of the whole department."
First year trainee, London
"At the moment I have much less client contact but in other seats, I have had a lot. It's luck of the draw really, but everyone should get decent client contact and be trusted with a reasonable amount of autonomy during the training contract."
Second year trainee, London
"I am in a smaller department, which means I have a good level of day-to-day responsibility and am trusted to correspond with clients."
First year trainee, London
"I am very involved in day-to-day management of some matters, with a supporting role in others, depending upon the size of the case. People like to ensure that you understand your role and also to let you know that you're appreciated."
First year trainee, London
"Client interaction is high - trainees are almost always invited along to the client meetings. Day-to-day responsibilities vary between departments but are generally quite diverse."
Second year trainee, London
"Client interaction is very seat dependent. In some seats you have a lot of client contact, others you have none. The same goes for the level of responsibility. Smaller teams generally provide more responsibility, however Intellectual Property seems to be the exception, where you can get genuinely complex work."
London
"I really like my role so far: I have been given a lot of responsibility, a large amount of client contact and a wide range of work."
First year trainee, London

"My role often equates to junior associate with regular client interaction through email and phone and plenty of drafting, although admin and bundling does play a part."
First year trainee, London
"I have high levels of client interaction as a trainee and there are increasing levels of responsibility throughout your training contract."
Second year trainee, London
"In my experience you get loads of responsibility straight away and there are a range of tasks and different matters to work on. Client contact can be up and down depending on the department. There is research and bundling, etc. like with any training contract, but it certainly isn't the norm."
First year trainee, London
"I have had a high amount of responsibility where possible with a large amount of client contact: attending client pitches and client dinners, presenting in front of clients, and a large amount of independence: emailing and phoning clients directly, etc."
Second year trainee, London
"I have regular client interaction and feel heavily involved throughout a matter and not a sideline assistant. Client contact is encouraged early on."
Second year trainee, London
