"I have found that trainees are able to take on as much responsibility as they can handle, and that you have plenty of client and intermediary contact."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I have some client interaction, although I feel that a lot of trainees' work is done behind the scenes. Often my role is research or drafting based, but I have client contact where the opportunity arises."
First year trainee, Plymouth
"In my role I have experienced a high level of client interaction, and teams trust trainees to speak directly with clients and to run meetings. I recently represented a client at a preliminary hearing and held meetings with witnesses."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"I am given high levels of responsibility for the work I am given. I am involved in a combination of small and large scale transactions."
First year trainee, Newcastle
"I have great exposure to the fast-paced legal world and interact on a daily basis with high profile clients while working on big projects/deals."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I find that my work is good quality: the trainees have ample chance to get involved and run aspects of large matters, or all of small matters. There are also good levels of client interaction in my role."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"I find that you get more client interaction in some seats than others. You can good matters to take ownership of, but I see that there is always an element (10%) of pure admin/secretarial work that gets given to you."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I have found that I have a huge amount of client interaction in my role. Depending on the matter, it can be you and a partner working on it or you, and a number of departments across the firm working on it."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"There is a strong focus on direct client contact wherever possible, although supervision is still maintained. My work is all checked, but I am trusted to contact people directly, and to make my own decisions. Every day can be completely different, analysing commercial contracts, drafting documents, collating due diligence, and there is a focus on experiencing everything rather than repetitive tasks."
First year trainee, Newcastle
"I found that I had plenty of responsibility from the start, and I was given high quality work and the opportunity to work with great clients."
First year trainee, Newcastle
"I get a great variety of work from the team. I have been to several client meetings, and regularly attend client teleconferences. I have also instructed counsel and attended conferences with counsel. I run files of my own where I am the key contact for the client, and the other side."
Second year trainee, Newcastle

"The client interaction varies from team to team. In some seats you run your own files and responsibility is always there if you show you are keen and ready for it."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"Within the first two hours on my first day I was at Court with a Senior Associate, and I already have two in depth cases to get stuck into."
First year trainee, Bristol
"As a first seat trainee I am expecting a lot of client interaction here at the firm."
First year trainee, Newcastle
"I enjoy my role; I get access to high value clients and work which is interesting and challenging."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I have only just started the training contract so I have yet to get to day-to-day activities, although, the induction training has been fun and has put me very much at ease."
First year trainee, Southampton
"I have daily client contact through phone calls and emails and I have worked to achieve greater responsibility. I can also rely on the support and assistance of colleagues both within my team and across the firm."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"The level of client interaction available is very high (based on the seats which made up my training contract). My responsibilities change on a day-to-day basis, and range from project management and attending client meetings (sometimes unsupervised but with appropriate pre/post meeting support) to document management and drafting."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"Client interaction depends on what seat you are in, but on the whole you get a lot of (supervised) client contact. There is a push for trainees to be doing decent chargeable hours which is reflected by the work given to trainees. Departments are willing to trust in trainees and push them to their limit if they demonstate their capability, which is great as you can see the trust building through the seat."
Second year trainee, Bristol
