The institution

Bournemouth University (BU) is a vibrant, dynamic and innovative institution and over 17,500 students choose to study with us each year. Of these, more than 1,800 are international students from 130 countries, creating a lively and diverse culture.

We are based on two campuses, Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus. Lansdowne Campus is close to Bournemouth town centre, while Talbot Campus is 3km away, on the border with Poole. Bournemouth and Poole are student-friendly towns located near some of Britain’s best beaches. Poole Harbour also has fantastic sailing and water sports facilities as well as cultural, artistic and social opportunities.

BU is an institution on the up, following rises in four major university league rankings this year. We’ve now entered the ranks of the top 500 universities in the world for the first time, according to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

We’ve also risen in all three major UK university league tables this year, with a rise of 11 places in the Complete University Guide to 54th nationally.  A rise of six places in the Sunday Times Good University Guide takes BU from 88th to joint 82nd, while in the Guardian University League table 2016 BU was up eight places to 63rd nationally.

We have a strong professional orientation with a focus on academic excellence and graduate employability, helping you to prepare for your future. That’s why 87% of our graduates are employed or in further study six months after graduating*.

By way of illustration, we are recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK and 60 of our animation graduates worked on Oscar-winning film Gravity and a number of BU graduates have been recognised by BAFTA for their visual effects work on the film Interstellar, which also won an Oscar for the Best Visual Effects in 2015.

Funding support

We recognise that postgraduate study can involve a considerable personal and financial commitment; however, graduates holding a Master’s degree are more likely to secure a better graduate job and earn significantly higher wages. As well as offering modern lecture theatres, seminar rooms, dedicated laboratories and 24 hour Open Access computing centres, our specialised academic resources reflect our commitment to first-class resources.

These include: purpose-built studios for computer animation and digital special effects, recording and radio studios, Final Cut Pro editing suites and a HD Sony television studio, MoCap (motion capture) studios, Rapid Prototyping Suite, Virtual Manufacture Centre and Rose Cottage, a unique ‘crime house’ available to forensic students.

Our impressive Executive Business Centre is home to many of our business and management courses, including the Bournemouth MBA. This Centre is not just about offering high-spec lecture theatres, a contemporary e-library or the latest interactive technologies. It also breaks the barrier between the traditional university experience and working within a genuine business environment.

It is a hub for expertise, information and consultancy, available to hundreds of businesses across the South of England. What better place to learn that where business itself is happening?

Our library service is a leader in the provision of electronic information and its integration into the fast-growing Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), a website giving you access to learning materials, email and discussion groups. It is also accessible externally, off campus.

Research is a vital component for underpinning a high-quality curriculum and for maximising our contribution to regional and national economies.

Our research offering is amongst the best in the country. In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 96% of our research was rated at an international level, with 18% of that deemed to be world leading.

Building on our research strengths and research potential, we have several Research Centres, focused on specific areas of interest, already gaining national and international recognition.
