Training Contract (2020 start)

Each year we ask up to 10 graduates to join our team as trainee solicitors and are currently recruiting for our 2020 intake.

Bristows is a medium-sized full service law firm that handles the kind of work you might normally associate with only the very largest firms. We have built up a client list that includes leading businesses from a variety of sectors including Life Sciences and TMT, whether global corporate, growing start-ups, charities or financial institutions. As part of a select and high calibre intake, trainees work alongside our partners dealing directly with clients right from the start. There's plenty of responsibility but this is matched by an extremely supportive and friendly culture.

Bristows might be known as one of the foremost intellectual property firms in the UK, but this only tells part of the story. Our lawyers are also recognised as leading authorities in a wide variety of other legal disciplines and as a firm we offer a true breadth of expertise. These are our core practice areas: intellectual property, information technology, corporate, commercial and technology disputes, real estate, regulatory, EU & competition, media & marketing, employment, and tax.

During the two year training contract, trainees undertake a mixture of 3 and 6 month seats within our core departments and also have the opportunity to go on secondment to our key clients. We also guarantee trainees a seat in our IP Litigation department.

Due to the nature of our clients and work we undertake, many of our solicitors come from backgrounds where they’ve earned degrees in science, technology and other technical disciplines. However the firm values having a diverse and inclusive workforce and we welcome applications from all degree disciplines, with the current trainees having degrees ranging from History and English, to Physics and Biochemistry. The minimum requirement for training contract applications is for a 2:1 degree in any discipline, but given the rigours of an IP practice, outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements are the norm, rather than an exception.

Whatever a candidate's background, the firm assess each application on individual merit and intellectual and commercial acumen, excellent communication skills, attention to detail and enthusiasm for hard work, and analytical and creative thinking; team spirit and a passion for challenges and success are prized qualities.

We conduct two rounds of interviews each year, one in February/March and one in July/August. Graduates and final year undergraduates are eligible to apply for either interview round. Penultimate year law students should only apply for the August round. To be considered for the earlier round please apply by 31st January and for the summer round apply by 31st July 2018.
