Since joining Bristows, I’ve been incredibly relieved to find that the training contract I was promised, is indeed living up to all expectations. Whilst applying to firms as a graduate, you are promised many things. Bristows promised a friendly firm, with an open door policy and a cooperative working environment. Bristows also promised a great work life balance and opportunities for trainees to increase their responsibility. Now that I am coming to the end of my first year at the firm, I have been pleasantly surprised that my first year has been exactly that.
Without doubt, the working atmosphere that Bristows works hard to maintain is brilliant. Partners, whilst working at the top of their field, have time for anyone who asks for it. The sense of camaraderie and team work amongst the fee earners is strongly felt and makes life as a trainee so much easier when you know that no query will be ignored.
I am currently sitting in the IP litigation department. Being in the biggest department at the firm has meant that I have had opportunity to get involved in some of the biggest cases. Whether it be conducting research, attending expert meetings or attending court – the work is both exciting and varied. Taking into account my background in Biochemistry, it has been great to be able to apply my degree to practice. Working on cases for big pharmaceuticals companies, where we are asked to scrutinise the technicalities of patents, has meant that I have been able to utilise my experience and combine my love of science with my career in the legal profession.
Whilst trainees attend the usual training as required by the SRA, nothing can beat the hands on experience that Bristows provides. Whether this be through attending external INN group seminars or maybe internal training sessions, we are constantly learning. The opportunity as a trainee to attend client meetings and counsel conferences firmly establishes my opinion that the best training Bristows provides is in your every day trainee life. Simply being here every day, and working hard, is making better lawyers who love coming to the office every day.
