Informal Training & Mentoring

8.6 / 10

(based on 12 ratings in 2018)

"Each trainee is assigned a mentor who they can talk to about any issues they may have in the firm, which can be helpful. Each trainee also has a mid-seat review and an end-of-seat development review, which have been wonderful for receiving praise and raising confidence in some areas. They're also good for receiving some helpful constructive criticism that has already helped me to improve my work."

"We have a number of different mentor figures that can be approached regarding any issues you might have."

"Every single person I've met at Bristows has been approachable and friendly and I have always been encouraged to ask questions. I get regular positive feedback and recognition, sometimes in front of the client!"
First year trainee, London
"The partners and solicitors are good at giving feedback overall, although it would be helpful to receive more feedback during each seat rather than all at the end."

"Bristows has rolled out training on giving effective feedback to everyone in the firm and it is very common for trainees to receive recognition and praise for the work they have been doing both one-on-one and in group meetings. There is a formal mentoring system in place where trainees are paired up with senior associates and can discuss work and career progression issues over a coffee. In addition, the partner responsible for reviewing your trainee diary and the partner you are sat with can be great sources of advice and mentoring."
Second year trainee, London
"The partners are excellent and sharing an office with a partner during each seat provides a tailored mentor. They are thorough in their feedback and invested in an individual's progress. The firm also has a mentoring scheme where senior-associates are available for informal advice."

"People are always there to help if needs be."
First year trainee, London
"There is an open-door policy and colleagues are usually able to find time to discuss work with trainees. There is a mentorship programme that can be useful and performance feedback is done via a formal review process at the end of each trainee seat."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone is very accessible for help if you need it and I do a lot of my work directly for partners. People take the time to sit down and talk to you about your work rather than just send an email back with lots of track changes. When you have worked hard or stayed late or produced something good, it is always recognised and you receive a thank you for what you have done. I have found that I have also received credit if it is later passed up the chain."

"There is a formal mentoring scheme but it's up to the mentor and mentee how often they meet. I find it more helpful to discuss my career with specific associates about different issues."

"Great training-diary reviewer who keeps an eye on my progress. My supervisors have been fantastic, offering guidance on work streams."
First year trainee, London
"Feedback is quite hard to get as fee earners are very busy. There is a mentorship programme at each level at the firm."
First year trainee, London
"The firm has a good mentoring programme where each trainee is partnered with a senior associate."
Second year trainee, London
"Both solicitors and partners are very accessible, although it does depend on the individual. Praise and feedback are often given on an informal level, although again, it does depend on the individual. At the end of each seat there is a formal feedback process."
First year trainee, London
"Associates and partners are very easy to talk to and will offer advice when you ask. Feedback is usually constructive and done in a very pleasant way."
London
"I have been positively impressed with the amount of feedback consistently provided by partners and senior fee-earners, regardless of how busy they might be. There are many layers of informal mentoring one has access to."
