Interview Questions

2018

"I was asked a lot about my life at university and how I spend my time, what my passions are etc. I was also asked some competency questions as well as some questions on what I would do in certain work situations. There were also a lot of general commercial awareness and business affairs questions."
Second year trainee, London
"The usual ones such as why was I interested in law and why Bristows. There were also questions about me, my degree, my hobbies outside of work, how my friends would describe me and what I would have done if I hadn't been able to become a lawyer."
Second year trainee, London
"Why Bristows? Why law? There were also some competency and CV-specific questions."
First year trainee, London
"The questions were a mixture of elaborating on aspects of my CV, scenarios, competency-based questions and broader questions such as who I look up to the most."
Second year trainee, London
"Why did you decide to apply to Bristows? Tell us about a time you had difficulty with a colleague or team mate."

"There were scenario questions and then questions about me as a person. They can be quirky!"
First year trainee, London
"I was asked about my CV and why I made the choices I have made."

"I was asked lots of questions about myself and also about the Scottish referendum. The interviewers were trying to see if I could argue for both sides of the debate. In my second interview I was also asked about how I would go about protecting a brand."

2016

"I was asked about my CV and why I had done the things I'd chosen to do. I was asked what I like to do in London and how my friends would describe me. There was one commercial/IP-related question relating to the different options available for a researcher who had identified the next block-buster drug but had used up all of his university funding."
First year trainee, London
"Why I wanted to do law, why I wanted to work at the firm, what I would do if I won the lottery, what I liked to do in my spare time. There were also some technical questions about IP protection and the market generally."
First year trainee, London
"A surprising amount about my school – what I thought of it, its teachers, opportunities etc. I was asked about a political issue of the time: the Leverson inquiries and what I thought about it. Problem solving eg (x) situation, (y) happens: what do you do?"
Second year trainee, London
"Why law? Why Bristows? Why I chose my undergraduate degree and what hobbies I had. They also asked situational judgment questions about situations you may find yourself in as a lawyer to find out how you would react. These aren't trick questions; just answer them sensibly thinking about any ethical issues that may arise and how you want to come across to a client or colleague."
London
"The interviewers tried getting to know me and to understanding my academic and extracurricular choices. They were interested in seeing how I would answer certain case scenarios and tested my commercial awareness."
First year trainee, London
"Who would you invite to a dinner party? Competency-based questions."
