I first joined the business as a placement student with the AB Sugar Technology team based at central office in Peterborough. Based on my performance, and through undergoing an assessment centre and interview, I was offered a graduate role with British Sugar. There was no doubt in my mind that this is the company I wanted to work for, especially after having a fantastic experience during my placement year.
Our initial training consisted of an induction week where all the graduates were introduced to different areas of the business including Operations, Commercial, HR and Health & Safety. We were also given an insight into British Sugar's position and the role they play within the wider group, AB Sugar and AB Foods.
I am currently based at the Bury St Edmunds factory as an Operations Graduate and my role involves gaining an in-depth understanding of the sugar manufacturing process through structured learning modules. Additionally, I will gain practical experience through working with every individual on my shift team, who have the skills and knowledge of various parts of the process to ensure the factory running as efficiently as possible.
I particularly enjoy the challenging scheme as a lot of it is self-driven, which requires strong time management and people skills while demonstrating a high level of technical understanding.
Everyone I have met at the factory is very friendly and they display enthusiasm when answering any of my queries, which encourages learning and makes it an enjoyable working environment. Furthermore, I am very impressed at the approach towards Health & Safety across the business as it is placed at the highest priority and every individual is involved.
My overall experience with British Sugar so far has been a positive one and I am eager to develop both personally and professionally within the company.
