"People are accessible and sitting in one room with your supervisor means you can ask silly questions in private. The people who give you work will talk you through the work given and are always happy to be asked questions. The feedback varies depending on the person but we have regular reviews (every two months) that give people the chance to offer your supervisor feedback that they will then discuss with you."

"There's very good access to partners and senior lawyers who are willing to give feedback either with or without a little prompting. They genuinely recognise that trainees are the future of the firm and are worth investing in."

"Supervisors are very good. They always take the time to help you improve your work and teach you tricks of the trade."

"Everyone is very accessible and you generally get good recognition for your work, especially at mid-seat reviews. I think new qualifiers should get a mid-year review in their first year to provide some feedback or guidance, as the first review is a year after qualification and you have been used to receiving feedback every two months throughout the training contract."

"I have found the firm to be good at providing feedback and willing to take time out to talk to you. People are generally good at providing positive and negative feedback, though this varies between departments."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"This is very constructive as we get consistent and continuous feedback. All levels of solicitors are approachable and take the time to explain concepts and feedback. All three of my supervisors have been at the top of their game and very keen to help me improve/build my skills base."

"Feedback does vary dramatically between people and I have had a variety of experiences. Praise for good work has been rarer than I'd have liked."

"You generally have to ask for feedback if you want it. You do usually get recognition and praise when you have worked hard on something."

"We complete mid-seat and end-of-seat reviews with both HR and our supervisors. This is a good opportunity to get feedback on your performance and discuss any concerns. I've been fortunate to have three fantastic supervisors, all of whom have been very approachable and provided useful, constructive feedback throughout the seat. Each department also has a training principal partner who acts as another point of contact for mentoring and support."

"I have had a series of great supervisors and I think most other trainees would say the same. Other solicitors and partners are all very approachable and supportive."
First year trainee, Bristol
"It varies across departments and will depend on what supervisor you get."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I think, sometimes, more feedback could be given on work and how to improve. We do have a formal meeting with our supervisors every two months though, which is good."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Almost every solicitor and partner I've worked with has made an excellent mentor. The supervisors are particularly good in this regard. They keep a careful eye on our development and make sure that we are receiving work that will continue to challenge us. They consistently praise good work and give helpful feedback."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Hard work is very much appreciated and, as a trainee, you don't mind putting in the hours if you are praised. My supervisors have been brilliant mentors both professionally and personally."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Depends on the supervisor. Some take a more active role in your development than others."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Everyone is very accessible here. The firm makes sure that trainees sit, where possible, with a senior lawyer and that means you get to watch how they work on a day-to-day basis so you are constantly learning. The firm could be a bit better with informal feedback."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Very good appraisal system and excellent supervisors. There's not a very formal mentoring system but it's not really necessary – advice is there if you want it."

"I have found that partners are accessible, the firm has a good review process and there are many opportunities for development."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Informal training and feedback varies among departments and individuals. People are often willing to provide good feedback and praise, and usually supervisors are good and supportive (although there is quite a degree of variation amongst them)."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Right from the outset, everyone at the firm offers their time (as far as they can) to help you make the best decisions with regards to your training contract and qualification."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Solicitors and partners are very accessible and we have a particularly strong mentor/supervisor system."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I think the firm is exceptional in this regard. We sit with our supervisor (normally a senior associate) but are encouraged to work with everyone in the team. Everyone is very supportive and provides constructive criticism and praise when it is necessary/due."
First year trainee, Bristol
"There's always someone to talk to here and to give you well informed guidance and advice. People act appropriately around sensitive issues and provide you their honest opinions."

"Generally supervisors are good. It helps that we are given a lot of responsibility so things are checked or you are given valuable feedback as more often than not what you're doing is sent out to a client. You don't tend to do things just for the sake of it. Partners are generally very approachable."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Excellent structure and genuinely helpful and keen supervisors. Rigid appraisal process."
First year trainee, Bristol
"It's hard to say how good mentoring is across the firm - in my experience it depends on the person. Some people are excellent at giving feedback, others not so much."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"In many of my seats I have worked directly with one of the partners."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I think the training is excellent, supervisors are always very keen to help and have high standards. They always expect quality work from you and give you good and honest feedback. We have mid-seat reviews which are informal and give you a feel for how you are performing in that seat, and more formal end-of-seat reviews where your performance for that seat is evaluated and compared to your aims and objectives at the end of your previous seat. I imagine if you did poor quality work or needed to improve in certain areas, your supervisors/senior fee earners would tell you about this and expect an improvement. Similarly, if you do good quality work the firm makes sure it gives you very positive feedback and encouragement to continue working in a similar manner."
